What makes for a great design? How much time and investment should you dedicate to development? The answer very much depends on your business. A successful launch is about understanding the needs of your target audience, a good design brief and constant – effective – communication throughout the process.

1. Design

This should include everything from research to competitor analysis and ongoing consultation. Once this initial work has been done, design should take place – we always provide at least two design concepts to our clients. Once you agree which concept you like, we’ll get to work on it, creating artwork and final creative. Once your site has been designed to a standard you’re happy with, it should be tested to ensure the best usability and functionality. This is why user testing, both at concept stage and development stage, plays an important role. It produces a rich and engaging design, which portrays your brand in an impactful way and satisfies your buyers’ needs and expectations.

2. Development

Development means taking your final design and making it work online, meaning lots of coding! Development can consist of:

Themes

Templates

Shopping cart

Customer services

Checkout

Contact us form

Newsletter signup

Information pages

Advanced modules

Site search

Tell a friend

Related items

Social bookmarking

Saved searches

3. Standard guided backend set-up

Backend set-up is so important to get right and NO corners should be cut. It involves setting your website preferences, including order management, payment methods, credit card processing, shipping methods, sales order workflow, promotion codes, inventory set-up, pricing and creating email templates for auto responders. Phew.

4. Advanced backend setup

Depending on the size of your website, you may want to be quite advanced with your backend set-up. This can include everything from having multiple price levels, quantity pricing, more than one currency, multiple warehouses and even multiple web stores. NetSuite ecommerce platforms can do almost anything you like – no matter how big or small.

5. Data migration

Data migration is very dependent on the having a perfectly formatted csv file to upload. This means Item information must be correct and up to date, and images need to be in the right format and categories.

6. On-page search engine optimisation (SEO)

If you want visitors once you launch, there are various ways you can go about it. One of the most cost-effective ways to get traffic to your site is through effective SEO, otherwise known as natural traffic. It’s important to make sure your SEO includes:

Competitive keyword research. Mix up keywords based on competitiveness and monthly search volume.

Site structure. Optimum navigation, internal linking, duplicate content check – all very important to get right for SEO.

Sitemap. Sitemaps are helpful for both people and search engines. Sitemaps tell search engines where to find all of the pages on your site and the priority of each.

Google Analytics. Google Analytics is free and arguably one of the best packages on the market. Better still, it’s free!

Friendly URLs. Ensure these are as concise as possible and include your target keywords for each page.

7. Website testing

This is where many companies go wrong. They put a website live without testing it – no! Testing ensures you hit the ground running once your site is launched and includes checking:

All links and pages work when you click on them

Your website works in all browsers, e.g. Firefox, Google Chrome, IE

Checkout and ordering – make sure you try different scenarios

Backend order workflow and fulfilment

Forms and auto email responders

8. Training

NetSuite ecommerce websites are really easy to use, but even the simplest platform requires face-to-face training. When we develop your website we’ll also include documentation you can refer to, as well as a full hand-over.

That’s it; you’re ready to go live. Once you’ve launched, unless you have an IT department, you will need after-launch support – normally this is for two months and involves resolving issues, enhancements, tweaks and training.

So you’ve joined the ranks of thousands of businesses worldwide and decided on a NetSuite ecommerce website. You’ve made the right decision! NetSuite is the only website software that supports your entire company – from accounting right through to managing customer relationships.

This means NetSuite ecommerce websites are perfect for small to medium businesses that really want to make an impact and drive the maximum volume of sales.

Now for your next most important question: Who should develop, design and launch your NetSuite website?

There are many NetSuite consultants throughout the UK. Here’s a checklist to use in order to make sure you choose the right one for you.

Proof. Can your NetSuite consultant show you (lots of) previous NetSuite ecommerce sites that they’ve successfully implemented? Do they have a ream of great testimonials and case studies? Make sure you give your NetSuite consultant’s recent work a thorough going over – test the site, contact the site owners for a reference and ask lots of questions.

Process. Boring? Not to us. Your NetSuite consultant needs to be focused on getting the process of developing your site – and launching it – exactly right. If they don’t, it’s your loss – literally. Business processes, done in the correct order to an agreed time schedule, ensure your site is launched on time and exceeds your expectations.

Personality. Design shouldn’t JUST look great; it needs to reflect your business. Make sure your NetSuite consultant is particular about getting a detailed brief from you. This should include competitor information, sites you like and why, sites you don’t like and why, information about your brand, and details about your target audience. Prospective customers should arrive at your site and think: “Yes – I am in the right place!”

Push. It’s not enough to simply have a website out there – if only! You need to tell your customers – and prospects about it. The best NetSuite consultants can help you push your website’s presence by advising you on search engine optimisation, pay-per-click consulting, emails, content and more.

Peace. Yes, last but not least, peace. Launching your website should be a fantastic, exciting experience. You shouldn’t spend hours agonizing over details – that’s your NetSuite consultant’s job! An excellent NetSuite consultant will ensure your website’s design, development and launch all happen seamlessly with the minimal amount of effort required from you. After all, you are the customer!

There is nothing more exciting than launching a new website or refreshing an existing one, but going live without considering these common mistakes can be detrimental to the growth of your business. So here they are, in all their glory!

1. Lack of planning

Project planning and deadlines are crucial to ensure timely delivery, otherwise the whole process can drag on forever and never reach launching phase. The trick is to agree deliverables at specific times and commit to them. Always ensure you have an upfront agreement with pre agreed milestones. Last but not least, make sure you have a project manager as your point of contact, who will work closely with you to manage time and resources effectively.

2. Poor design

A bad design is any design that doesn’t reflect your business or its personality and, most importantly, doesn’t deliver results! This can happen when a designer doesn’t understand your needs. Don’t let your designer start without an approved brief – effective communication is key when it comes to designing your website. Discuss competitor sites with design elements that you like or dislike – this is extremely helpful in getting the design right from beginning.

3. Converting design to HTML is not pixel perfect

Lack of experience with the NetSuite software and content management systems can be hugely detrimental – there are so many ways you can set up a site in NetSuite. That’s why it is critical to choose the right path and work with a developer who has good experience with NetSuite – this ensures that your first NetSuite implementation is 100% pixel perfect according to agreed design concepts.

4. Problems with implementation

An experienced NetSuite developer can implement any design, feel and customisation needed. A standard web developer, however, will struggle and may tell you that the things you ask for are not possible in NetSuite when almost anything is possible! Most importantly, it must be painless for a non-techie to update content. There are many ways you can set up a website in NetSuite so that it is both dynamic and easy to update.

5. Testing

You now have your website set up in NetSuite and it looks great, but is the whole purchasing workflow functioning as you expected? Have you been trained in how to process the orders? Time needs to be dedicated to testing so your site runs as efficiently as possible from the start.

6. Backend set-up not correct

A lot of how your NetSuite website will behave depends on correct backend set-up. Many companies make the assumption that any web design agency can configure their website anyway they want, but not all web design agencies are proficient in backend development so make sure you get references and check case studies.

7. Underestimating data migration

One of the main reasons for delaying a project is underestimating data migration. Working with small businesses, we know how busy things can get, and data is an area where we need the original and correct core data to work with – from you. Migrating data can be more time consuming than you anticipate. Do you have all the up to date product details? Do you have good quality images? At the point of CSV import there are always many failed attempts because data is not in right format or there is missing data.

8. After-launch support and training

Unless you have a dedicated in-house IT person with good HTML skills, you will need at least two months’ support and training after you go live. This two-month period is used to fix any bugs, resolve any issues and provide training so that you are comfortable updating future content.
